Memories of my Uncle

Created by Patrick 8 years ago
Uncle Paul will always be remembered by me as a gentle, kind and thoughtful man. I know that his dedication to teaching, allied to his calm, yet authoritative manner will continue to inspire me, as I attempt to follow in his footsteps.
I will remember his formidable intellect; his sheer breadth of interests, his wisdom and knowledge. As a child back in the 70s, my abiding image of Paul is of a benevolent Uncle who would always see the best in someone. Memories of playing in the Vicarage at Deeping, with Camilla and a very young Mim, where Paul would always show us the virtues of calmness and patience even though we must have been a bit of a handful.
Paul was a most generous man.
My best personal memories of Paul have come in the last few years of his life. In spite of the degenerative illness, the one thing that Paul was able to keep, was a formidable long term memory. He would regale us with great stories from his own childhood, and those of my Dad. His mind was lucid and he lit up when he was able to recall stories from Lincoln, Culham or Deeping. Most of the best incidents and anecdotes usually involved a young Bruce (Dad) doing something he shouldn't have !
Thank you for some lovely memories Paul. I hope you get to meet up with Bruce now, and share a few beers talking about the things that made you both tick....sport, history, politics, the outdoors and food! You will both make a formidable quiz team up there!,
RIP
